New Studio News

For those of you following my social media pages, you know I starting moving into a new combo art studio and music rehearsal space with my band Green Cathedral (go to www.green-cathedral.com to hear our music). (Our old building was bought by new landlords and they are in the process of evicting all former tenants). Luckily we found a two-room suite in a commerical building located in Maple Glen, PA. This building had been completely rehabbed this past year (two years ago it was struck by a tornado!). The new space is light-filled and lovely and we plan on having one room as the band rehearsal room and the connecting smaller room as my work studio / office.

This past week my bestie / artist friend
Jennifer Domal and I did the second (and final) move for my art studio (last week we did the majority of the move from my third floor walk-up in Norristown to my one-floor walk up in Maple Glen, PA. We ended up walking about 40 flights of stairs by the time we were done!). This week we had only a smaller amount of work to do, however, we did have one heavy item to try and move - a six foot work table / bench that is extremely heavy.

Jennifer and I just before tackling the big table move.

I had my doubts we'd be able to get it down the stairs (it had been left behind at my old studio by a previous tenant, probably for the same reason.) Jennifer insisted I try and take it as a new work bench of that size would be costly. So Jennifer and I unscrewed the steel legs from the hardboard top, which made it (slightly) more manageable. It still was formidably heavy though, and we used some moving straps to put under it to help us carry it down the stairs. Not going to lie, it was not easy, but we got it done.

Anyway, after all of that, I went by the new studio this week to organize. My room is mostly done though the door is still being worked on. The first larger room (not pictured) will have all the band gear. That will be worked on this coming week.

SAVE THE DATE!

More About the Tour:
Explore 79 art studios in Chester County and get to know the artists showing in them. See how and where these 200 artists create. Learn about their craft and find a unique piece to start your day. Support local artists, understand their stories and connect with the art world around you.

There is something truly unique about starting your day with art. Maybe when you wake up, the first thing that makes you smile is what you see hanging on your wall. It could be that handmade mug into which you pour your favorite coffee. Starting the day with art connects you to the world around you.

County Studio Tour is a spectacular way to explore the creative world of local artists. What is often inaccessible to the public is the ability to see an artist in their own space, working on pieces that they are passionate about. By being able to connect with the art and artist on a deeper level, it is possible to retain those special moments that art provokes. The Chester County Studio Tour provides that connection for one weekend yearly.

“County Collectors”

Every year, participating artists are asked to create one unique 6- x 6-inch piece of original art and sell it for $90. County Studio Tour wants to make art affordable for everyone and wants to show that art can be everywhere. Whether this is your first time buying original art or you are a seasoned collector, the tour has something for everyone. In some instances, a favorite artist might be out of someone's price range, but with the County Collectors Club, art is within reach. Some art enthusiasts are out of wall space yet enjoy the thrill of adding new art to their collection. This becomes possible with the County Collectors Club since the pieces are considered small.

All the pieces are uniform in size and framed with a simple, elegant black frame. To assure quality and uniqueness, all pieces will have a specially-marked certificate printed on the back commemorating the year's studio tour. County Studio Tour asks the artist to create only one commemorative piece of art, so plan your day and get out early to ensure you have art on your walls by Monday!

My County Collector for this year’s Chester County Studio Tour: “Racing Rabbit”, ink, acrylic and “fauxsaic” (hand-cut and colored paper collage) on wood panel. 6 x 6  inches. $90* (price is exclusive to the tour only and is not available prior to official tour dates of May 20-21, 2023).

Thank you! Until next time…..

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lynnette Shelley is an award-winning Pennsylvania artist specializing in contemporary mixed media animal paintings. Having a great love of wildlife, nature, patterns and archetypes, Shelley fuses these influences into her strikingly unique artworks. Her paintings strike a primal chord in many viewers, with almost Jungian associations to the colors and shapes. Her highly detailed and complex compositions are created using a sophisticated process developed from a buildup of multiple layers incorporating techniques in both drawing and painting - from crosshatching to ink splatter to linear painting. Some of Shelley's work (her “fauxsaic” paintings) also incorporates elements of collage in which she adds hand-colored and cut watercolor paper to the artwork in a process that resembles mosaic tile.

Shelley's animal and nature themed artworks have been displayed nationally as well as regionally at museums, art galleries and other venues. In 2021, Shelley was awarded "Master Artisan" status by the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

In addition to her fine art pursuits, Shelley is also the co-founder of The Red Masque, an original dark art rock / progressive rock band she has been writing and performing in since 2001. The Red Masque recently released a new studio album. Shelley is also the vocalist in Green Cathedral, a contemporary art rock band. They released their debut album in September 2017.

Originally from Delaware, Shelley lives in Ambler and maintains a private studio in Maple Glen, Pennsylvania.
