ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Akupara is the name of the Hindu world turtle. A world turtle, also known as the cosmic turtle or tortoise, is a myth featuring the animal bearing the universe on its back. This archetypal image is also used in some Native American and East Asian myths. And in nature, turtles or tortoises coming out of hibernation underground can be covered in layers of earth, which makes it easy to see how such a myth could evolve. This artwork is a more whimsical depiction, with a young Akupara covered in flowers.
