ON THE DRAWING TABLE:
Currently I am working on a 30 x 30 inch artwork featuring a wild horse set against a stylized wildflower background. I hope to finish the artwork in the next several days (so far I've been working on it off and on for most of the week). The artwork is being created with ink and acrylic on a cradled hardboard panel. I've photographed the work in stages so far so you can see my process. I'll share the final artwork again with you by the next newsletter so you can see artwork came out. You can also follow me on my facebook page or instagram account to see the final artwork as it is finished. NOTE: click on images to view larger. STEP 1:After gessoing / priming the hardboard panel with several coats, I liberally splash, stain and swirl the board with acrylic inks mixed with water. I often use my hands to spread the ink across the board as well as spray and splash with water or other ink colors. This process can take hours as I wait for the artwork to dry or semi dry before adding more layers of ink. Depending on how much water and ink is used, it can also take a couple of days to dry completely.
STEP TWO: After creating a very basic chalk outline, I start to use white acrylic paint to emphasize the contours of the horse. I've also started to block out certain areas with acrylic paint to make it more opaque. In the far left corner you can see where I've started to create a third layer of ink pen outlines to create pattern-work.
STEP THREE: I now start cross hatching on the horse's body and adding more pattern-work in the background
Stay tuned! |
