From May 16 through July 11, 2013 the Ambler’s own Art in the Storefront gallery hosts work by Pennsylvania artist Lynnette Shelley. The Art in the Storefront is located at 41 E. Butler Avenue Ambler, PA 19002. Opening reception is May 17, 5:30 to 7 PM.
Read an article about the show as well as a brief interview with Shelley here on the Ambler Patch.
Shelley is a mixed media painter and illustrator who mines archetype and folklore for her artwork subjects. Her paintings strike a primal chord in many viewers, with almost Jungian associations to the colors and shapes. Her zoomorphic animal art and folklore-inspired creations are both primitive and sophisticated, and have been likened to images from an undiscovered ancient civilization or culture.
According to the Ambler resident, “One of my primary interests has always been exploring legends and stories from around the world. Why are certain motifs ubiquitous across cultures and continents? These archetypal stories are told repeatedly in different guises throughout myth and folklore, and animals are often used to convey these mysteries. Whether painted on cave walls, portrayed as omens or worshiped as personifications of the gods, animals were a favorite theme for our ancestors. My artwork takes a closer look at this archetypal animal kingdom. Reinterpreted through abstraction, decorative element and contemporary vision, these creatures speak to our collective unconscious."
Sophisticated compositions are a theme with Shelley, as the muted blues and greens of “Lusus Naturae (Loche Ness Monster)” (22 x 30 inches, mixed media on paper) shows. Featuring a complexly serpentine leviathan who undulates in an aquatic setting of rolling waves, the artwork recalls Celtic knotwork and medieval bestiaries. "Lusus Naturae (Loch Ness Monster") recently won an award in the drawing category at the Art Assocation of Harrisburg's January 2013 exhibit, Fairytales, Fables and Fantasy. According to juror Carrie Breschi: "Brilliant use of materials to compose a fun and energetic piece. The lines were so masterful on the dragon..."
In her work “Autumnal II” (24 x 36 inches, mixed media on hardboard), Shelley uses a process of wet and dry mediums as well as paper collage to create a mosaic of colorful autumn forests, watched over by the prescient eye of a solemn raven.
Shelley, a professional artist and illustrator whose work has been shown nationally and collected internationally, is also one of the artists participating in the historic Yellow Springs Art Show in Chester Springs, PA, on April 26 through May 12th as well as at the Chester County Studio Tours this May 18 and 19th. Then, on May 18 and 19th, I'll be taking part in the Chester County Studio Tours. This will be my first time taking part in this annual art tour. Since I am not a Chester County resident, I'll be a guest artist at artist Monique Kendikian-Karkessian's home studio in Malvern for that weekend, along with two other guest artists. I will be bringing out a ton of new artworks for this show in a wide variety of price ranges as well as some matted archival art prints. There will be free refreshments and lots of artwork to look at from the four artists at the studio.
