Work in Progress: Emergence

I started "Emergence" yesterday and worked on the artwork much of today. I will be busy for the next three days with both the Brandywine Festival of the Arts and a First Friday art reception at JAM Gallery (see my website for details) so I won't get to  work on it again until next week, but I hope to finish sometime then.

The name for this piece came to me as I was painting it, with the goat coming more into focus as I added color and shading to him. You may not be able to see them in the rough sketch but I also have a Polyphemus moth on his left side (representing death and the afterlife) and a bird with a nest full of eggs (representing life and the physical realm). The Goat himself is supposed to represent Nature and Fertility (as also represented by the lush plant life around him). His twin horns represent duality of life / death and their spiral patterns symbolize life cycles.
