Latest Artwork: Painted Bear

Had a few hours of unexpected free time today so I decided to make an Expressionistic, painted bear. First I took some gessoed artboard and applied a thick layer of Golden's Fiber Paste, which, when dried, has a similar texture and absorbency to handmade watercolor paper. I've been meaning to experiment with this paste for a while and I was pretty happy with the results. If you like a thickly textured surface to work on, and like to use water-based mediums, it's a lot of fun to use.

As for the bear itself, I used a mix of watercolor and acrylic for pigment. I probably would have just used all watercolor, but when I opened my brand new package of watercolor paints, I discovered someone had nabbed two of the tubes of paint out of the box while at the store and then sealed up the box again. So I was missing a couple of the colors I wanted to use and just used those colors in acrylic instead.

I've been working on a lot of tight and detail-oriented artworks lately, so "Painted Bear" has a much looser feel to it as I wanted to shake things up a bit and just experiment with paint and impasto. It's also fairly small as I am building up my inventory of smaller works for some upcoming shows.

When I was finished I varnished the entire painting with Glossy Gel Medium to seal the artwork as well as give it a rich and luxurious gloss, which enriches the colors as well. I took these photos before I glazed the picture as the shine would make the painting harder to photograph.
