“Curious Creatures: The Animal Artwork of Lynnette Shelley,” an exhibit of contemporary mixed media paintings and illustrations with animal and mythological themes by area artist Lynnette Shelley, will be on display from August 1 through September 30, 2012 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore. The public is invited to the artist's reception on Friday August 3 from 3 to 7 pm, where prints of her work will be on sale

Originally from Delaware, Ms. Shelley minored in Fine Art at the University of Delaware and now lives and works out of Ambler PA. She describes one of her long-term interests as being the archetypal stories and legends whose motifs recur across cultures and continents in different guises through myth and folklore, and which are often populated by animals. She describes her work as taking a "...closer look at the archetypal animal kingdom," and in the process, striking "...a primal chord in many viewers, with almost Jungian associations to the colors and shapes". Reinterpreting these archetypal images "through abstraction, decorative element and contemporary vision", it is her view that "these creatures speak to our collective unconscious."

Her work has been exhibited nationally and regionally, in numerous solo, group, invitational and juried shows and arts festivals, and most recently at The Painted Bride in Philadelphia, McCabe Library at Swarthmore College and at the Historic Yellow Springs Arts Show. She is represented locally by Countryside Gallery in Newtown, PA and Nichols Berg Gallery in Philadelphia. Examples of her work can be seen at her website, www.lynnetteshelley.com.

The exhibit is sponsored by Swarthmore Friends of the Arts. For information about Swarthmore Friends of the Arts visit www.swarthmorearts.org or contact Exhibit Chair Michele Southworth, 610-543-1108, msouthworth@verizon.net.
