It's come to my attention that my band The Red Masque's website is temporarily unavailable because we are exceeding bandwidth. I've put in a service request to purchase more bandwidth with my web host so hopefully it should be back online by tomorrow at latest..... Sorry for the inconvenience!
In the meantime, for those who missed it, our kickstarter campaign is in full swing to raise funds for the recording of our fifth full-length album, Mythalogue. We head into the studio in April and acclaimed producer / musician Bob Drake will be mixing the CD. To read more about the project, or to donate, please visit our Kickstarter campaign page here.
We are giving away lots of cool incentives to those who donate, including some artwork by yours truly. Currently we've reached 43 percent of our goal. CLICK HERE TO DONATE

Latest Artwork: Coronation of the Forest King
I spent about ten hours straight working on this piece yesterday (for a total of about 22 hours or so or labor alltogether) and now it's finally complete. See my previous blog posts to view the work in progress photos.
In this artwork I am using the stag to represent Nature / The forest / The Primal World and he is being anointed by the orbs with the powers of Nature. The blue orb represents the world. I used three orbs because three is a sacred number in many myths / religions / cultures.

36 x 24 inches
mixed media and collage on art board

Update: I decided to tweak the blue orb in the center of the picture. I added tiles to represent the cardinal points as well as the four seasons.
Revised photos below.

Work in Progress: Coronation of the Forest King pt II
To see the first part of this post, please click here.
I am still working on my new stag artwork, which I started Sunday night. However, I am getting close to finishing with the stag's body and then I can move on to the background today. I estimate I can finish this up in another 48 hours, knock on wood.
In the meantime, here are some work in progress photos from yesterday.

Work in Progress: Coronation of the Forest King
This week I am trying to complete one more artwork for an important juried show before their deadline of April 13th (this is the same show that I am submitting my last artwork, "Dueling Octopus" to). I decided to make another large piece on art board, that combines techniques from my "Dueling Octopus" (lots of fine line crosshatching) with my more mosaic-looking pieces (colorful ink-stained paper collage).
Here are some work in progress photos from today.

Latest Artwork: Dueling Octopus (Sucker Punch)
I finally finished my octopus piece last night. I had been thinking about leaving the background clear, to show the natural wood color, but decided the octopus looked too heavy and needed something to ground it as opposed to floating on a clear background. So I painted the background an iridescent gold.
This artwork was very difficult to photograph because of the size, the iridescent gold paint as well as the clear gloss protective coating causing camera glare, the subtle coloring, and all the tiny details on the body of the octopus that is not showing up on the photographs. Hopefully you can get an idea of the piece from these photographs, but I do say the piece looks more impressive in person. I don't usually toot my own horn when it comes to my artwork but I do think this is my most favorite piece I have ever made at this point. I am thinking of doing a second piece at some point of the same size / style with an octopus and a sperm whale, or perhaps a giant squid and sperm whale...
I will be submitting it to a juried art show at a museum shortly, along with four other artworks. Hopefully this one, or one of the others, will get in. Stay tuned......
